This week in our ‘5 questions with…’ series, we put the spotlight on Michelle Errington, Digital Performance & Growth Lead.
Q.1 – What excites you most about Gill and your role here?
For me, it’s the range. I’ve been with Gill for nearly 10 years, and working across Gill Instruments, Gill Sensors and Labcal means you’re dealing with different products and different types of customers, so it doesn’t feel repetitive.
It’s also a global business, so you’re not just focused on one market. You have to think about how people in different regions search and what matters to them.
I’m quite data-led in how I work. I like understanding what people are actually doing and using that to improve things.
Q.2 – What interests you most about the industry?
It links quite closely to that. The industry has moved on a lot. It used to be very product-focused, now it’s more data-driven and more about helping people find the right solution.
People do a lot of their own research first. They want clear information and enough detail to understand how things fit into what they’re trying to do. So, the role of marketing has shifted a bit, it’s more about making that process easier and clearer.
Q.3 –How do you see technology impacting your role over the next 5 years?
I think customers will expect more from the products. Not just accurate data, but something they can actually use. Data that fits into their systems and helps them make decisions.
There’s also more focus on how easy things integrate. That used to come later, now it’s something people look at from the start.
And I think the buying process will keep becoming more self-directed. People come in more informed and with clearer requirements. So it’s about making sure they can find what they need and feel confident in it without having to speak to someone straight away.
Q.4 -Who has inspired you the most in your career, and what did you learn from them?
My dad has had a big influence on that. He works at the Met Office, and growing up he’d talk a lot about weather, forecasts, and what sits behind them.
It wasn’t just the outcome. It was understanding why things happen and how different factors come together. That’s probably where I get my approach from, wanting to understand what’s actually going on rather than just taking things at face value.
Q.5 -Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us.
I’m a big Star Wars fan. I think part of it is I like how everything links together and makes sense when you look into it. It’s probably the same way I approach things at work. I like to understand what’s going on rather than just go along with it.
